Understanding Historical Clothing

This day long course looks at how different period techniques differ from modern practice and how this affects the look and hang as well as the use of a garment.

We shall be exploring the cutting and pattern drafting techniques employed at different times in the past and how those methods evolved over time, explaining why a Victorian attempt at 17th Century clothing looks so different from a 21st century attempt and why both look so different from the real thing.

We shall also be taking a look at stitch types and construction methods and their role in creating the distinctive appearance of clothing at different historical dates.
